One’s Room is an immersive collective exhibition that unfolds as the domestic space of an autofictionnal character named One. It embraces the old, wooden and organic architecture of Datsuijo. One isn’t physically present, yet they have forged profound connections with the material space of their room. Within it, drawings, paintings, photographs, videos, but also cloth, furniture, books, food, plants, a diary, and all sorts of things that can be found in a house, are a tangible manifestation of their ever-evolving, mixed and elusive identity. Each of these items holds stories, emotional connections, and imaginaries, inviting us to rummage into their intimacy.
One’s self is a tapestry woven from the curators' and artists’ personal experiences. In their room, they explore questions relating to gender, kinship, sense of belonging and the overlooked realms of what is considered "feminine work" such as care, domestic chores, and minor arts. There, objects are no longer purely decorative, functional, or passive elements: they become vessels for imaginaries, self and communal care, spiritual encounters and political reflections, that the audience can freely touch, savor, and linger on. One’s room is also one of communality and hospitality, where people are invited to gather and share practices, thoughts and food during special events.
「One’s Room」(おねの部屋)は、自伝的小説のキャラクター「One」（おね）の部屋として展開される没入型のグループ展覧会です。本展は、古い木造建築である「脱衣所- (a) place to be naked」の特徴を活かしながら展開されます。おねは物理的には存在しないが、その部屋の中にはおねの存在が感じられるようになっています。部屋の中には絵画や写真、ビデオのほか、布、家具、本、食べ物、植物、日記など家にあるさまざまなものが展示されています。これらはすべて、絶えず変化し、多様で捉えどころのないおねのアイデンティティを具現化したものです。それぞれのアイテムには物語や感情が込められており、私たちをその親密な世界へと誘います。
おねの自己は、キュレーターやアーティストの個人的な経験から織り成されるタペストリーです。部屋の中では、ジェンダーや家族関係、帰属意識、「女性の仕事」とされがちなケア、家事、マイナーアートといった領域に関する問いを探求します。そこで、物は単なる装飾的、機能的、または受動的な要素ではなく、想像力や自己とコミュニティのケア、精神的な出会い、そして政治的な反省の器となります。観客はここで自由に触れたり、味わったり、じっくりと考えたりすることができます。おねの部屋はまた、コミュニティとホスピタリティの場でもあり、スペシャルイベントを通じて、人々が集まり、実践、思考、食事を共有することが期待されます。

One’s Roomは、Oneという架空の人物の家庭空間として展開するグループ展です。この展覧会は、伝統的な日本家屋の建築を持つ空間「脱衣所」で行われます。Oneは実際には存在しませんが、彼らの部屋という物理的空間と深い繋がりを築いています。その中に展示されたオブジェクトは、彼らの絶え間なく進化し、混ざり合い、時には捉えどころのないアイデンティティの具体的な表現です。各アイテムは物語、感情的なつながり、多様なイマジネーションを持ち、私たちにOneの複雑な内面に深く潜ることを誘います。展覧会の期間中（オープニング、中盤、クロージング）には、集団読書、パフォーマンス、料理イベント、ビデオ上映などのシリーズイベントが開催されます。
Oneのキャラクターは、フィクションとキュレーターの個人的な経験の両方に触発されています。Oneのキャラクターを通じて、ジェンダー、帰属感、そして「女性の仕事」（ケア、家事、マイナーアート）に関する問いについて探求します。展覧会のタイトルは、1929年にヴァージニア・ウルフが「自分の部屋」というエッセイで書いた女性が表現し自己実現するために物理的かつ比喩的にプライベートな空間を持つ必要性について語ったことへの遊び心あるオマージュです。私たちはこの比喩を一般的なマイノリティに拡張し、今日の社会の課題の中で自律と親密さのリンクを探ります。
展覧会には、絵画、ビデオ、音声とテキスト、バーチャルリアリティのほか、陶芸、編み物、布、家具、食品、植物、日記など、家庭空間で見られるあらゆる種類のものが含まれています。芸術と工芸、美学と実用性の境界線はあいまいになり、オブジェクトを単なる機能的なアイテムや私たちの生活の受動的な要素としてではなく、挑戦することが求められます。One’s Roomでは、アート作品は日常生活から切り離された神聖な遺物として存在するのではなく、私たちの日々の存在と絡み合った生きている実体となり、感情的および政治的な意義の入れ物となります。この視点から、家庭空間は単なる住居以上のものとなり、癒し、自己と共同体のケア、精神的な出会い、政治的な闘争の場となります。変動するアイデンティティが組み立てられ、分解され、再構築される避難所となります。
従来の展覧会フォーマットを超えて、家庭環境内で芸術創造を提示することにより、観客により親密な方法で芸術を体験してもらうことを目的としています。単なる作品の観察を超えて、訪問者は空間全体と相互作用し、すべての感覚を使って参加することが奨励されます。彼らは触れたり、味わったり、リラックスしたり、瞑想したり、望む限り滞在する自由を持っています。同様のアプローチで、One’s Roomで開催されるさまざまなイベントは、プライベートとパブリックの間の時間を提供し、限られた訪問者を集めて芸術家との深い交流と重要なつながりを可能にします。キュレーターとして、キュレーションと展示デザインを根本的に創造的で芸術的な実践として再定義しようと志しています。私たちは展示空間に日常的に物理的に存在し、訪問者にアクセス可能であり、観客と作品との間の出会いを容易にする仲介者としての役割を果たします。このアプローチは、展示体験をダイナミックで感情的に共鳴する相互作用に変え、障壁を取り除き、芸術的な物語に対するより深い評価を育むことを目指しています。
[Exhibition Statement]
One’s Room is a collective exhibition that unfolds as the domestic space of an imaginary character named One. It embraces the space Datsuijo, whose architecture is that of a traditional Japanese house. One isn’t present, yet they have forged profound connections with the material space of their room. Within it, curated objects are a tangible manifestation of their ever-evolving, mixed, and sometimes elusive identity. Each item holds stories, emotional connections, and diverse imaginaries, inviting us to delve into One’s complex intimacy. All along the exhibition period (opening, middle, and closing), One’s Room will welcome a series of events including collective readings, performances, culinary events, and video screenings.
One’s character is both inspired by fiction and by the curators’ personal experiences. Through One’s character, we explore questions relating to gender, sense of belonging and “feminine work” (care, domestic work, minor arts). The exhibition’s title is a playful wink at Virginia Woolf's essay "A Room of One's Own" (1929), where the author writes about the necessity of having a private space, both physically and metaphorically, for women to express and emancipate themselves. We would like to extend this metaphor to minorities in general, exploring the links between autonomy and intimacy within the challenges of today’s society.
The exhibition includes drawings, paintings, videos, sound and text, virtual reality, but also ceramics, knitting, cloth, furniture, food, plants, a diary, and all sorts of things that can be found in a domestic space. The line between art and craft, aesthetics and utility blurs, challenging the conventional notion of objects as purely functional items and passive elements in our lives. In One’s Room, artworks cease to be detached, sacred relics set apart from daily life. Instead, they become living entities intertwined with our day-to-day existence and vessels of emotional and political significance. In this perspective, the domestic space, more than just an accommodation, becomes a place for healing, self and communal care, spiritual encounters, and political struggle. A shelter where fluctuating identities can compose, decompose and recompose.
By transcending conventional exhibition formats and presenting artistic creations within a domestic setting, our objective is to encourage our audience to experience art in a more intimate manner. Beyond mere observation of artworks, visitors are invited to interact with the space holistically, engaging each of their senses. They have the freedom to touch, savor, relax, meditate, and linger for as long as they desire. Within a similar approach, the different events held in One’s room will provide a time between the private and the public, gathering a limited number of visitors and allowing deep exchange and significant connections with the artists. As curators, we aspire to redefine curation and exhibition design, treating them as inherently creative and artistic practices. We will be physically present in the exhibition space on a daily basis and, by being accessible to visitors, will serve as mediators, facilitating encounters between the audience and the artworks. This approach aims to transform the exhibition experience into a dynamic and emotionally resonant interaction, breaking down barriers and fostering a deeper appreciation for the artistic narrative.
